WHAT WE'RE DOING

From Contamination to Restoration:
The Power of Mycoremediation

Mycoremediation is bioremediation technique that harnesses the natural abilities of fungi to break down or absorb contaminants in soil, sediment and water. Fungi possess diverse capabilities to naturally transform harmful contaminants into less toxic substances through biological processes such as enzymatic breakdown, bioaccumulation and biodegradation. These processes enable fungi to metabolize certain contaminants, effectively turning them into energy or nutrient sources.

We have achieved notable success in a laboratory setting using innovative mycoremediation techniques to address some of the most persistent legacy contaminants commonly found in areas with a long history of industrial activity and emerging pollution, including complex organic molecules and heavy metals. Currently, we are transforming from proof-of-concept to full scale implementation, aiming to demonstrate that our mycoremediation techniques can be deployed as commercially viable solutions for industrial-scale remediation.

Mycoremediation of Contaminated Sites

Wild Mushrooms_edited.jpg

Mycoremediation is bioremediation technique that harnesses the natural abilities of fungi to break down or absorb contaminants in soil. Fungi offer a range of capabilities ... that including:

  • Biodegradation: Fungi can break down complex organic molecules into simpler compounds, making them more accessible for other microorganisms to metabolize and further degrade.

  • Metal accumulation: Certain fungi can accumulate heavy metals within their mycelium, helping to prevent these toxins from leaching into groundwater or adversely impacting plant growth.

  • Soil Structure Improvement: Fungal mycelium binds soil particles together, enhancing soil porosity, improving water retention, and promoting healthier root systems.

  • Carbon Sequestration: As fungi grow and decompose organic matter, they play a role in sequestering carbon, reducing atmospheric CO2, and contributing to climate change mitigation.

  • Water Filtration: Fungi can filter water by breaking down pollutants and supporting regenerative life cycles essential to maintaining healthy ecosystems.

We are partnering with organizations that have known contaminated sites to demonstrate the effectiveness of mycoremediation.
